Jim Olvera: MUSEA: Columbia Foundation for Visual Arts | Columbia Archive Gallery

November 11, 2023

The Columbia Foundation for Visual Art presents MUSEA, an exhibition of photographs by Jim Olvera at the Columbia Archive Gallery (2731 Hickory Street, St. Louis, Missouri 63104) Opening reception from 6 to 9 p.m, November 11, 2023.

Jim Olvera, a native Texan, grew up in Oklahoma and in 1978 earned his BFA from Washington University in St. Louis. Based in Dallas, his photography has been widely published and featured in juried shows, private collections, and the Permanent Collection of The Library of Congress. Jim’s lifelong fascination with museums began during childhood with family road trips punctuated by stops at historical markers, scenic turn-outs, and museums. His photographic study of museums originally focused on architecture but later expanded to include the influence of these spaces on their visitors. For over 40 years, he has documented the curious behaviors and expressions of museum-goers and guards, the thoughtful contemplation of some, and the utter boredom of others. Each museum is a new adventure, and every change in exhibits a fresh opportunity.

The Columbia Foundation for Visual Art is dedicated to the work and values of Leslie Laskey and Frank Schwaiger and their students.
