Overview
The Italian painter Afro Basaldella, known simply as Afro, was an important exponent of the mid-20th century European art movement known as "Art Informel". Through his association with the "Group of Eight", he helped define the aesthetic of this wave of modern artists through expressive, abstract compositions anchored by calligraphic line. His work progressed from the bold, expressionistic tendencies of his early career to a more orderly geometric abstraction in his late period.
